For as long as I can remember, I have been drawing people. I have always found people fascinating; it’s amazing how God gave every one the same features (you know, eyes, nose, mouth) and yet each one is unique. As a young girl, I would get fashion magazines and try to draw the people pictured. My intent was to make my drawing look exactly like the photograph. I wasn’t exactly good at it then, but I absolutely loved doing it and had such a growing passion for art. That passion is what drove me to Lindenwood University where I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Education degrees.
Now, when I do a portrait, I’m not just trying to capture what God fashioned on the outside, but what He’s creating on the inside as well. I want the portrait to emanate the essence and soul of the person. I love it when the person who commissioned the portrait sees the finished work and says, “It looks more like them than the actual photograph!”
I believe God gives every person distinct talents and abilities as part of His purpose for our lives. He allows us the free choice to use our gifts as we desire. God gave me a love for people and a passion for art. And I find that drawing portraits is the best way for me to use my gifts to fulfill God’s purpose. I feel so privileged to be able to do what I love most in this world, for a living.
